society

transportation

Walking isn't the only way around Bel'serea.

Chocobo / Horses

With just a Gyshal green in hand, you'll attract a wild Chocobo and be able to tame it. More regularly though, there are breeders near the major cities who will breed Chocobo and Horses FOR you - it would save you the trouble. Loyal and hearty creatures, who are able to run long distances. Both are able to wear custom made saddles and armour in case you were to go into battle.

Wagon

Slightly slower, are the wagons, which usually have services going in between cities on regular routes. Although they slow the Chocobo or Horses down, more can be transported on a wagon, whether it be people or items.

Boat

Around for hundreds of years, boats have been a dependable mode of travel between any distance. A few sea creatures here and there, there have only been a few instances where a boat has been attacked on the high seas.

The only other thing to worry about would be sea sickness.

Airship

Newer to this world, Airships are the cutting edge in transportation and imagination all over the world. Known to have birds fly beside them in the air, these great pieces of machinery take half the time that boats do, and now that the crews are more experienced with them, have the least malfunctions. Now with regular services between towns just as much as boats do - however slightly more expensive - they are going to make Wagons and Chocobos a thing as forgotten as the Ancients.

villages

Since the fall of civilization, some buildings were built so strong, that they have survive the test of the ages and still stand very strong to this day. In some cases especially with villages, those buildings weren't made so strong, and newer buildings have covered the older ruins. This isn't as common as with newer cities, as old buildings would be demolished and rebuilt on top of the old site.

spires

As curious as the old ruins are, the Spires (some others call monuments or towers) are another old world curiosity. Every village, township, city and metropolis has a curious spire in the middle of it; varying in age, colour and shape.

Their notability is mostly in the fact that they look like giant crystals jutting up from the ground, yet they are not transperant, like a gemstone. Usually a dull brown or grey, varying anywhere from 10 feet onwards (as it isn't know how far deep into the ground they go), have usually 4 to 6 sides, with white glowing symbols all down the sides. Chiselled from stone, these monuments actively ward off monsters and demons and are the centre of the Shakai'ana Ikasera rituals.

Shakai'ana Ikasera
Every year, White mages of the area gather around the Spires, and infuse it with a wave of Mist. If a Shaman exists at this time, he or she would go to the world capital. The white mages would be accompanied by one or more Summoners (or sometimes an apprentice Conjurer) in case something goes wrong. The Ritual's purpose is to infuse the crystal inside the spire, so that it'll keep strong and protect the village. Some scholars speculate that doing this every year helps the mist, and allows it to travel within the planet better.

Inferi Celebration
A day of reflection on those who have passed before us - the day of the dead. In recent years, youngsters have been dressing up in clothing from their grandparents and great grandparents, and impersonating them, and not just honoring them. Half the day is spent in the cemeteries and the ancient battlefields (accompanied by warriors of course), and all the time after midday is devoted to dressing up and celebrations.

basic locations

Inns: To Recover health and have a good meal. The interiors are made to represent an overview of the culture of the city for the visitors, and is a showcase of their history.
Hospital: Where the sick and injured go for urgent care. Usually larger than other buildings and is often busy.
Wagoneer/ Stables: Drop off and pick up your wagon or travel companion here. Usually set up near the entrance of the town or a central location, they will take care of your wagon or horse/chocobo until you need to use it again.
Items Shop: Recovery Items for HP and status effects: Might hold other items useful for battle.
Bakeries: Buy sweets, breads, spices and various other things here.
Taverns/ Pubs: Just get drunk already! A lot of these can get seedy, so tread carefully.
Fortune Tellers: Find your fortune! Usually the tellers are very ... over the top.
Alchemist's Shop: Most commonly for balms and potions with very little result for the common people, but the Alchemist usually provides his or her services for the Doctors and White mages at a nearby hospital. Additionally for travellers, any stable mixture of common battle items will be sold, but usually have a 'use by' date to make sure the effect within the potion doesn't expire.

palea tribe

A small group of nomadic Humes who can use Mist naturally to heal or to do various things. They provide for themselves with these abilities. They live mostly in the grasslands of the west, north of Rorik, which earned them their name, where the Mist is at a constant stream. Their home is built upon small ruins, not to disturb the natural tranquillity of the ancient site. Some believe it's because they live in such an obscure area that they have this natural born ability. They're forbidden by their ancestors to become one of a mist class; they believe that you don't need to be a part of some hooty tooty mage club to have the right and ability to wield mist, which is within everything.
Since the Palea tribe is nomadic, they can usually go from place to place without being noticed, however their appearance isn't THAT much different from normal humes. They're more tanned, and have tattoos on various places of their bodies and vary in colour, with tribal influences and shapes.

notable figures

valfea

The only one of three Ascension families existing today. In fact, the members of the Valfea family backed out early in the current era. Currently, they're one of the largest family in existence, and have never seen such prosperity, in opposition to the two other families which never backed out, are few in numbers, are bitter, and are barely managing to get by. They're very involved with politics, and use their wealth to benefit the majority of society. Members of the Valfea family are made entirely of Humes, and are mainly highly skilled warriors, even to this date; a small group of them are skilled with Black Magic.

mikkse

750 years ago, Mikkse was a very skilled Black Mage. There has been little detail about how he was cast out, yet was mercifully taken in by the White mages. He eventually lost some skill with his original magic, and wasn't as skilled with White magic which was taught to him, so to make up for this, trained himself with a sword. Henceforth he called himself a Red mage, and dyed his hat with the dye some white mages used on their robes, and pinned back the point from the top. Given a golden feather by his wife, he pinned it into his hat so it would always be with him.
White and Black mages to this day, who would really desire to leave their caste, take up his example, and go out on their own (even to the opposite magic system). However one should be careful; encountered by one from their original caste, it's highly likely that they would be commanded by the elders to kill the one who betrayed them.

ajnnera

A white mage Viera who lived around 500 years ago. She was gathering herbs to put together a remedy for a group of ailing villagers in the north, when she was attacked by a particularly vicious demon. It chased her all the way back to the village, yet not without gravely wounding her. Collapsing finally on the front steps of an old temple, the Demon stood above her ready to strike, when Mist collected around her, and gave her the power to cast Holy to the demon. Ajnnera cast Holy on the Demon many times, but after the 4th time, the Mist collected in her body so much, it threw her body into Sanction.
To this day, her body can still be seen several feet off the ground, in stone, and permanently fused into the column; her legs are nearly gone, but most of her torso and arms can still be visible. This serves as a grim reminder of what a Sanction can do, and that a Sanction can be a very dangerous thing, and shouldn't be desired. Also to this day is her legacy; most of the village members are white mages, and she is worshipped as the saviour of the now very prosperous town. Finally in the eyes of the White Mage's society, she gained the title of an Honorary Shaman for achieving Holy at such a time.

karonnis

Son of the current Shaman 100 years ago, Karonnis travelled the world as Ajnnera did before him. He never achieved Shaman-ship, however had immense influence in their society, and assisted the Shaman in her ailing health. Some say he achieved Holy at a young age, and it wasn't reported until decades after of his achievement, out of respect for his mother, who was Shaman at the time.

tobul

The famous smith of the northwest. It's fabled in the area around the mountainous village in which he resides that he's been able to mould Adamant into weapons, however these blades are all but lost. He's getting on in years, and he stays in the village because of their equally famous syrup candies.
